About
this book When the first
edition of Hidden Beneath Our Feet
was published in 1997 by Leeds City Council, it sold out within a matter of
weeks. With sewerage
issues, including ownership of the water companies and discharge of sewage
overflows into watercourses, now the subject of frequent debate, it seems
like an appropriate moment to publish this considerably expanded and updated
edition. Aware that the
history of our sewerage inheritance is hidden even more effectively than the
sewers themselves, the author has tried to bring to light some of its
milestones. The new edition
not only brings the story of sewerage up to date: It also introduces
comprehensive source references and adds a fascinating Appendix on the
history of sewage overflow practice and legislation. |
